Three Technology Transition Offerings that consist of Technology Update Pricing for AWLC and two revised Transition Charges for Sysplexes program variations are being made available.
Technology Update Pricing for AWLC
When stand-alone zEC12 servers are priced with AWLC, or when all the servers in an actively coupled Parallel Sysplex are zEC12 servers priced with AWLC, these servers receive a reduction to AWLC pricing which is called Technology Update Pricing for AWLC.
Technology Update Pricing for AWLC is a monthly license charge price structure available for eligible software programs running on an IBM zEnterprise EC12 server. Technology Update Pricing for AWLC applies to z/OS operating system software and many of its associated middleware software programs, such as CICS® , DB2® , and IMS™ .
Technology Update Pricing for AWLC also applies to the z/TPF and its associated z/TPFDF programs. Other IBM operating systems and associated middleware software programs continue to be licensed and priced based on previously announced charge structures.
For details, refer to the Programs eligible for AWLC section.
As an enhancement to AWLC, previously announced in Software Announcement 210-238, dated July 22, 2010, Technology Update Pricing for AWLC, may be implemented in full capacity or sub-capacity mode under the previously announced terms.
- Full-capacity: Monthly charges for Technology Update Pricing for AWLC-priced programs are based on the total MSU capacity of the IBM zEnterprise EC12 server. To view the IBM MSU ratings for the IBM zEnterprise EC12 servers, visit the Mainframe Exhibits section of the System z Software Contracts website at
- Sub-capacity: Monthly charges for Technology Update Pricing for AWLC-priced software programs are based on the highest number of MSUs utilized by the combined Logical Partitions (LPARs) in which the Technology Update Pricing for AWLC program executes during a reporting period. LPAR MSU utilization is measured by the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool (SCRT) using the highest observed rolling 4-hour average MSUs utilization. Customers choosing sub-capacity pricing must use SCRT to generate sub-capacity reports and submit these reports to IBM each month. Additional customer responsibilities under sub-capacity pricing are specified in the ICA Attachment for IBM System z AWLC, (Z125-8538).For more information about SCRT, refer to
Schedule of AWLC reductions for Technology Update Pricing for AWLC (TU1)

AWLC Transition Charges for Sysplexes program
The AWLC Transition Charges for Sysplexes program, previously announced in Software Announcement 210-238, dated July 22, 2010, is updated to include the zEC12 and now includes two variations, Transition Charges for Sysplexes (TC1) and Transition Charges for Sysplexes (TC2):
- Transition Charges for Sysplexes (TC1)When two or more servers exist in an actively coupled Parallel Sysplexes consisting of one or more zEnterprise system servers (zEC12, z196, and z114) with one or more z10 EC or z10 BC servers, all servers within the Parallel Sysplex remain on Workload License Charges (WLC) pricing, but receive a reduction to VWLC pricing across the aggregated Parallel Sysplex . This reduction provides a portion of the price-performance benefit related to AWLC pricing based on the proportion of zEnterprise system server capacity within the Parallel Sysplex .The number of MSUs used to determine both the total MSUs for the Parallel Sysplex and the zEnterprise system server proportion of MSUs are based on the announced IBM full capacity ratings that can be found on the Mainframe Exhibits section of the System z Software Contracts website atSchedule of VWLC reductions for Transition Charges for Sysplexes (TC1)

- Divide the sum of the zEC12, z196, and z114 MSUs by the total MSUs in the sysplex.
- The result of the calculation must be rounded to the nearest whole percent. Using standard rounding rules, fractions of a percent of 0.5 or more are rounded up and fractions of a percent less than 0.5 are rounded down. Rounding examples:
- 0.204999 rounds down to 20%
- 0.205000 rounds up to 21%
- 0.404999 rounds down to 40%
- 0.405000 rounds up to 41%
- Refer to the Schedule of VWLC reductions section to determine the applicable reduction.
- Transition Charges for Sysplexes (TC2)When two or more servers exist in an actively coupled Parallel Sysplex consisting of one or more zEC12 servers with one or more z196 or z114 servers, all servers within the Parallel Sysplex remain on AWLC pricing, but receive a reduction to AWLC pricing across the aggregated Parallel Sysplex . - Refer to the Schedule of AWLC reductions section to determine the applicable reduction.
Rules for MSUs under Technology Transition Offerings
All MSUs used in determining Technology Update Pricing for AWLC, Transition Charges for Sysplexes (TC1), and Transition Charges for Sysplexes (TC2) exclude capacity related to specialty engines, unassigned capacity, and temporary capacity such as, but not limited to, "Capacity Back Up", "Capacity for Planned Events", and "On/Off CoD".
Rules for aggregation under Technology Transition Offerings
Aggregation of product MSUs across multiple System z servers is allowed if the servers meet the actively coupled Parallel Sysplex definition rules in the Attachment for IBM System z Advanced Workload License Charges, (Z125-8538). z/OS must be licensed and running in z/Architecture® (64-bit) mode on each of the System z servers of a Parallel Sysplex receiving aggregated Technology Update Pricing for AWLC, or aggregated AWLC under Transition Charges for Sysplexes (TC2), or aggregated VWLC under Transition Charges for Sysplexes (TC1). FWLC products do not aggregate MSUs since their charge is independent of machine size or LPAR utilization.
Terms and conditions
All terms and conditions associated with Technology Update Pricing for AWLC, sub-capacity pricing, Transition Charges for Sysplexes, the Attachment for IBM System z Advanced Workload License Charges, and the IBM Customer Agreement apply.
In conjunction with software programs implemented with Technology Update Pricing for AWLC, programs having Flat Workload License Charges (FWLC) will continue to be charged using FWLC. These programs have one flat monthly charge per IBM System z server, independent of the size of the machine to which the program is licensed.
System z New Application License Charges (zNALC) and Select Application License Charges (SALC) remain available for their respective eligible programs under their respective terms and conditions on servers with Technology Update Pricing for AWLC.
Documents updated specifically for the three Technology Transition Offerings, consisting of Technology Update Pricing for AWLC and the two revised Transition Charges for Sysplexes program variations include the Supplement for Technology Transition Offerings to Attachment for IBM System z Advanced Workload License Charges (Z125-8994).
AWLC terms and conditions described in the following documents apply to Technology Update Pricing for AWLC and both Transition Charges for Sysplexes program variations:
- Attachment for IBM System z Advanced Workload License Charges (Z125-8538)
- IBM System z Advanced Workload License Charges Exhibit (Z125-8539)
In addition, WLC terms and conditions described in the following documents also apply to Transition Charges for Sysplexes (TC1):
- Attachment for IBM System z Workload License Charges (Z125-6516)
- IBM System z Workload License Charges Exhibit (Z125-6324)
Parallel Sysplex License Charges (PSLC) are available as an alternative charge metric for eligible software programs running on a zEC12 server. If available for your specific configuration, you have a choice of selecting either Technology Update Pricing for AWLC or PSLC, but not both, for your IBM software programs within the z/OS or z/TPF operating system families on a zEC12 server. In conjunction with software programs implemented with PSLC, System z Usage Pricing Charges remain available for your respective eligible programs under System z Usage Pricing Charges terms and conditions.
