AWLC

Coinciding with the announcement of the IBM® zEnterprise® 196 (z196) server, IBM introduces a new software pricing structure called Advanced Workload License Charges (AWLC). The AWLC pricing metric leverages the reporting mechanisms and existing Millions of Service Units (MSU) per hour tiers of the Variable Workload License Charges (VWLC) pricing model while extending the software price/ performance provided by the VWLC tiers. AWLC applies only to eligible z/OS® and z/TPF software programs and their associated middleware programs when running on a z196 server. For details, refer to the Programs eligible for AWLC section. Benefits of AWLC include: • Reduced price points, versus VWLC, for all MSU levels with more than three MSUs • Additional unit cost improvements, versus VWLC, for eligible monthly license charge (MLC) IBM middleware programs with more than 875 MSUs • Sub-capacity or full-capacity implementation • Aggregation in an actively coupled Parallel Sysplex® For actively coupled Parallel Sysplexes with a mix of System z® hardware technologies (one or more z196 servers with one or more System z10® EC, System z9® EC, System z10 BC, or System z9 BC servers), a Transition Charges for Sysplexes program provides aggregated VWLC pricing along with a reduction in VWLC as customers upgrade machines to z196 servers. Aggregated AWLC pricing is not available for actively coupled Parallel Sysplexes until all of the servers in the sysplex are upgraded to z196 servers. VWLC is not available for a single, standalone z196 server, nor for an aggregated sysplex consisting only of z196 servers. The new AWLC pricing structure and the Transition Charges for Sysplexes program require an Attachment for IBM System z Advanced Workload License Charges (Z125-8538) to be added to the IBM Customer Agreement. Also new is the IBM System z Advanced Workload License Charges Exhibit (Z125-8539).

How SCRT determines the license capacity

Figure shows an example of how SCRT calculates the license capacity for different product and LPAR combinations.

The peak interval is the highest utilization determined from the sum of the utilization for all LPARs in which a particular product ran in a given hour. It is not the sum of highest utilization for individual LPARs in which a particular product ran during different hours. In this example, the peak interval for z/OS is in hour 719. The z/OS utilization value for the month is the sum of the z/OS utilizations in both LPARs during hour 719, or 130 MSUs. The peak interval for DB2 is in hour 2. Since DB2 only runs in LPAR A, the DB2 utilization value for the month is the value for LPAR A in hour 2, or 75 MSUs.

zIIPs

Software pricing implications Furthermore, from a software perspective, zIIPs are very similar in concept to zAAPs. zIIPs cannot be IPL'd and cannot run any operating systems. This optional feature allows customers to purchase additional processing power exclusively for select data serving environments without affecting the total MSU rating or machine model designation. IBM does not impose IBM software charges on zIIP capacity. Additional IBM software charges apply when additional general purpose CP capacity is used. Also, zIIPs may have the effect of reducing charges for Sub-capacity eligible IBM software products by lowering the rolling 4-hour average MSUs for LPARs with assigned zIIPs. Customers are encouraged to contact their specific ISVs/USVs directly to determine if their charges will be affected.

Parallel Sysplex License Charges

Parallel Sysplex License Charges (PSLC) is a monthly license charge pricing metric designed to support the high availability design of a Parallel Sysplex cluster. PSLC may be applied to many different types of mainframes including IBM System z servers, S/390 Enterprise servers, and others. A listing of PSLC-eligible servers is listed on the Mainframe Exhibits section of the System z Software Contracts web site.

PSLC may be applied to a standalone mainframe environment. However, aggregation benefits may only be applied across a fully qualified Parallel Sysplex environment. PSLC is designed to provide improved price/performance as you grow. This lower cost of incremental growth is provided via the decreasing unit cost per MSU, a key element of the PSLC price structure.

Sysplex - In a fully qualified sysplex environment, PSLC software charges are based on the total MSU value for only those machines where the products execute. This provides you the flexibility to grow your sysplex either vertically (grow an existing server) or horizontally (add a new server) and experience similar incremental software costs.

Standalone - For a standalone (uncoupled) machine, PSLC charges are also available. Software charges for products executing in this environment are based on the MSU capacity of the machine. In an uncoupled environment, MSU values are not aggregated with any other machines.

Goal of Service

The principal objective is reducing the cost of Mainframe Software

After reviewing the contracting WLC model with IBM we will try work to reduce the cost of the Customer.

We'll work on each workload, customizing it with the basic premise of cost reduction without loss of performance in workloads online.

The work aims to reduce unmet demand and improves response time besides increasing the lifetime of the CPC.

If the customer wishes to reduce the maintenance cost of software now, we have to study the environment to provide the best solution without service degradation.

We will use our knowledge of WLM and WLC to manage workloads under z/OS.

The work extends to any workload running under z / OS.
